Dangers of E-Cigarettes in Bangladesh and the Need for Their Prohibition

Abstract

In Bangladesh, where 49% of the population consists of youth, the rising use and availability of e-cigarettes pose a serious public health concern. Although only 0.2% of the population currently uses e-cigarettes, an alarming 95% of users are youth and students. Tobacco companies are aggressively targeting this demographic through deceptive marketing strategies, including social media promotion, drama and movie placements, and organizing vape fairs and Vaping Day events. E-cigarette shops are increasingly found near private universities and colleges, and many restaurants in Dhaka allow vaping within their smoking zones. These tactics are creating easy access and encouraging youth addiction to vaping. Furthermore, various vaping platforms are emerging under the influence of tobacco companies to normalize and expand the use of e-cigarettes among children and adolescents. In light of these threats, and guided by the Appellate Division’s directive (Civil Appeal No. 204-205/2001), which prohibits the introduction of new tobacco products and companies, a complete legal ban on e-cigarettes is essential to safeguard the country's young generation and ensure a tobacco-free future.
